This course considers the nature of how the world’s oceans are regulated. It will go through how ocean governance has evolved through time and how it actually works. In addition, there will be a focus on particular issues such as piracy, maritime security and environmental protection for the oceans.

Course Instructors

Stuart Kaye

Stuart Kaye is the Professor of Law at the Australian National Centre for Ocean Resources and Security at the University of Wollongong. He has been an international law academic, specialising in the law of the sea and maritime security since 1995. He was previously Dean of Law at the University of Western Australia (2011-2013), and Dean of Law at the University of Wollongong (2002-2006). He is a Fellow of the Royal Geographical Society and of the Australian Academy of Law, and is admitted as a Barrister of the Supreme Court of New South Wales. Stuart has written ten books and around eighty other publications, principally on the Law of the Sea.
